A pre-ride check on an e-scooter is not marketing ritual — it's a 60-second window to intercept the three failure classes responsible for most solo falls and fires: (1) mechanical — under-torqued stem clamp or folder (Xiaomi's June 2019 M365 recall covered 10,257 units precisely because the screw in the folding apparatus could come loose, causing the vertical arm to break off mid-ride), microcracks at the deck, a perforated sidewall; (2) braking — a stuck pad, a warped disc, air in a hydraulic line, severely worn pads; (3) electrical — battery at 18% when the route needs 28%, a dropped display connector, a throttle that won't return to zero.
