Segway Ninebot ES2

SKU: NINEBOT-ES2

Description

The Segway Ninebot ES2 is the mid-tier model in Segway-Ninebot’s ES line (ES1, ES2, ES4), launched in 2018 as a folding urban commuter. It is built around a single brushless front-wheel hub motor rated at 300 W nominal and up to 700 W peak, giving a top speed of 25 km/h (15.5 mph) and a quoted range of up to 25 km (15.5 mi) on the internal 36 V, 5.2 Ah (187 Wh) lithium-ion pack managed by a Smart-BMS. Unusually for its class, the ES2 has both front and rear shock absorption to offset the firmness of its 8-inch front and 7.5-inch rear solid tubeless tyres. A customisable circular LED dashboard, an integrated front light, IP54 water resistance and a Bluetooth smartphone app complete the package, while an optional clip-on external battery mounts on the stem and roughly doubles range. Segway is a US brand founded in 1999 by Dean Kamen and owned since April 2015 by Beijing-based Ninebot — whose early investor and OEM partner was Xiaomi — so the ES line is sold under the Ninebot by Segway name. The trade-off for its compact, light build is the solid tyres and modest power, which make the ES2 a model for short, flat trips rather than long-distance or fast riding.

Model history

The ES2 was launched by Segway-Ninebot in 2018 as the mid-tier model of the ES line (ES1, ES2, ES4). Segway is a US brand founded in 1999 by Dean Kamen and acquired by Beijing-based Ninebot in April 2015. The ES2 became one of the best-selling and most-reviewed folding commuters of the late-2010s micromobility boom and a reference design for the era: front and rear shock absorption on solid tyres, one-click folding, a circular LED dashboard and an optional external battery. The ES platform directly underpinned scooters deployed by shared-fleet operators, making the model historically significant independent of its commercial relevance today.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Light at about 12.5 kg with one-click folding for carrying and storage
  • Both front and rear shock absorption, rare for a scooter in this class
  • Solid tyres eliminate punctures and need almost no maintenance
  • Optional external battery roughly doubles range
  • Customisable circular LED dashboard and app control

Cons

  • Solid tyres give a firmer ride than pneumatics despite the suspension
  • Modest range of up to 25 km on the internal battery alone
  • The 300 W motor limits climbing to roughly a 10% grade
  • Top speed of 25 km/h is slower than faster models of its era
  • Older model, so repairability and parts availability are limited

Verdict

The Ninebot ES2 is a light, compact folding commuter, best for short, flat city trips where portability and low weight matter more than long range or high speed. Its dual shock absorption on solid tyres and optional external battery make it a flexible reference model from the early micromobility boom.
