SEGWAY
Segway Ninebot ES4
SKU: NINEBOT-ES4
Description
The Segway Ninebot ES4 is the flagship of the foundational ES line (ES1/ES2/ES4), launched in 2018 and built around a 300 W nominal front hub motor that peaks at 800 W. Its defining feature is modular range extension: a removable external 187 Wh battery is mounted on the steering stem alongside the internal 187 Wh pack, giving a combined 374 Wh (36 V, 10.4 Ah). This allows a manufacturer-quoted top speed of 30 km/h (18.6 mph) and a maximum range of up to 45 km (28 mi), though real-world testing tends to return roughly 32-37 km depending on rider weight and speed. The scooter rolls on solid tubeless tyres (8-inch front, 7.5-inch rear) with front and rear shock-absorber suspension, brakes via a combined electronic regenerative (KERS) front and mechanical rear foot brake, and adds a one-step folding stem, an integrated LED dashboard and Bluetooth app connectivity. Segway is a US personal-transport brand founded in 1999 by Dean Kamen and owned since 2015 by China’s Beijing-based Ninebot; the combined Segway-Ninebot is the global market leader in consumer electric kick-scooters, and the ES line was an early flagship of that combined entity.

Model history
The ES4 was launched by Segway-Ninebot in 2018 as the top model of the ES line — essentially an ES2 chassis fitted with a second, externally mounted battery that doubles capacity to 374 Wh. It was an early mainstream example of add-on / swappable battery design in a consumer scooter, and the ES platform itself (folding stem, dual electronic and mechanical KERS braking, app-connected LED styling) became a reference point that the whole budget-commuter segment copied. That makes the ES4 a necessary historical node in a complete e-scooter archive.

Pros & cons
Pros
- Dual-battery setup meaningfully extends range over single-motor scooters of the same class
- External battery is removable, simplifying transport and replacement
- Front and rear suspension smooths bumps despite the solid tyres
- One-step folding stem and a modest 14 kg weight make carrying and storage easy
- Regenerative front brake feeds some energy back to the battery
Cons
- Real-world range (around 32-37 km) falls notably short of the 45 km figure
- Solid tubeless tyres transmit more vibration than pneumatic tyres
- 36 V, 300 W system limits hill-climbing ability (15% maximum grade)
- A full charge of both batteries takes about 7 hours
- The stem-mounted external battery shifts the centre of gravity and protrudes above the frame
Verdict
The Ninebot ES4 is a commuter scooter aimed at the urban rider with a longer-than-average journey, its main strength being the doubled range delivered by the add-on external battery. It suits riders who value distance and a compact folding design over the smoothness of pneumatic tyres or outright speed.
